About two weeks ago, we loaded two of our Dexter steers into the horse trailer to take them to Shady Lane Processing. We take our livestock to an Amish shop outside of Belle Rive. Dad likes the friendly service and how Mr. Mast does our meat.
It wasn’t very easy loading the two beasts up. One steer was very scared of us, but the other was not so afraid. We had to build a gate to push the cows into the trailer when they got close. After about five tries, we finally got them both loaded. When we shut the trailer doors, they went wild and tried to get out. As soon as we gave them some hay and a little grain, they both calmed dawn.
The next day, we hitched the trailer to our Suburban and headed to the Butcher. We told the butcher how we had used the longhorn’s horns and hide to make shofars and holsters.
His boys wanted to make a shofar, too. We gave them one we had made. They were excited!
A couple days ago, the Butcher said our beef was ready to pick up, so Mom and Dad drove up to get the meat.
When they came back, we unloaded it and put it into the freezer.
Dexters are smaller cattle but have good flavor. There were steaks, roasts, two hearts, and lots of hamburger. I can’t wait to eat the heart!
