Our Visitors

We recently had two Canada geese come to our pond. It was exciting because we have never had them come before. Canada geese are black, white, and brown. I like to watch geese.

The female goose lines her nest with sticks, moss and down. She doesn’t lay more than one egg a day. She can lay up to five eggs in her clutch. It takes up to 25-30 days before the eggs hatch.

Now the hatchlings are ready to hunt for food. The Canada geese eat minnows, water plants, and grass. Now they molt. The molting stage is when the geese lose their old feathers and grow new feathers. They do this before it is time for migration.

The goslings stay with their mother until after the spring migration. The goslings are ready to fly. In the winter the geese fly in a V shape as they migrate south, and in the summer they migrate north. Before they take off in the fall, they are often seen grazing in corn fields. They eat as much as they can for the long journey south.

I am glad the Canada geese came to visit our pond. I had never seen this large wild bird at our pond before.
